There’s a trope in film and TV where a pencil is stuck through a folded piece of paper to represent the workings of a worm-hole. Here this is used as short-hand for Bryson’s own approach to explaining scientific concepts through everyday comparisons.
The receipt in this context acts as a vehicle for type while still fitting the everyday aesthetic.
