Exotica is a music genre started in America in the 1950s that evokes a vague, Shangri-la-like utopia made up of influences from the South Pacific and the Orient. The genre was headed by artists like Martin Denny and Les Baxter before subsequent re-appropriation by Japanese musician Haruomi Hosono in the 1970s.
I wanted to explore this idea of layers of appropriation and distortion but also the idea of culture as a commodity.
In my cover I present these ideas through a badly scanned 3D model of a shop mannequin wearing a Hawaiian shirt and the use of price stickers to present type.
